Technical and Governance Consulting for Mining, Tailings and Water Dams

Technical and Governance Consulting for Mining, Tailings and Water Dams
ITRBs and/or Advisory Panels are an important governance mechanism in the effective management of tailings and mining dams. My experience including geotechnical engineering, geoenvironmental engineering, consulting, industry and association background allows for strategic, knowledgeable and pragmatic advice on technical and governance matters. Technical experience has included all aspects of tailings facility design through the mine lifecycle, from permitting through slope stability, monitoring and closure.
Industry leading experience with international tailings facilities across various commodities, paired with experience developing and applying international standards and guidance allows for risk assessment (FMEA, sQRA, etc.), project reviews, technical and governance based, grounded in an understanding of leading industry practices.
The long-term resilience of tailings facilities relies upon both sound technical work and effective governance. We help develop new or review existing Dam Safety Management Systems (DSMS) or Tailings Management Systems (TMS) for companies, including implementation of various governance systems and processes. We offer development, or assistance with development, of effective OMS, EPRP, and Dam Integrity programs
Some of our most favourite workdays have been conducting knowledge transfer. Training and workshops are available and can be custom tailored to the needs of the client. I’ve conducted workshops in the past of a variety of topics from the basic Dam Safety Inspections for Operators to advanced Slope Stability Analysis and Tailings Management Systems. Experience with the development and application of GISTM, the ICMM Conformance Protocols and other industry guidance allows for practical advice to operators.
We are experienced in the development of process and systems for the conformance to the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management and an approved auditor for Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM). Our experience extends to participating with ICMM members during development of GISTM, the ICMM Conformance Protocols, the ICMM Tailings Management Good Practice Guide, and GISTM Training Materials (links provided for your convenience). We have experience in other auditing activities also, including internal assurance reviews and Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) audits. Where full GISTM validation is required, LGG Inc. can assemble a multi-disciplinary team of experts. LGG is pleased to work other highly qualified industry partners on offering GISTM conformance validation: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7270478074167590912/
LGG Inc. works closely with other subject matter experts in industry to provide specialized services related to tailings, water, closure, social and risk management. If you require a multi-disciplinary project or review, or interested in related services not explicitly listed here, please do not hesitate to contact us and will work to assemble a team for your project.
I believe that the best business originates from loving what we do and doing it to the best of our ability. I am an internationally recognized, experienced and competent project and operations manager, executive and technical principal. My nearly 34 working years have benefited from a suite of various experiences and learnings, culminating in a career focused on geoenvironmental engineering, particularly focused on tailings engineering, tailings management and tailings governance. My operations management style is generally paternalistic, and I enjoy building and/or working with teams of highly qualified people so that we can successfully tackle the most challenging (and fun) projects. My engineering experience is primarily within the disciplines of waste and tailing management, including site investigation, design, dam safety management systems (including Dam Safety Reviews), containment systems (slurry walls, lining systems, seepage collection, etc), slope stability assessment, instrumentation installation and monitoring, and advanced laboratory testing. My best days at work are visiting mine sites, consulting with various stakeholders, and providing knowledge transfer through workshops and/or mentoring other engineering staff. I have functioned as the Engineer of Record for tailing dams, have authored environmental impact statements for new mining projects, and been the project manager for numerous site investigation, design, construction, and monitoring projects related to tailings and water related to mine, industrial and municipal waste. Most recently I was the Global Practice Lead -Tailings for BHP, where I established tailings standards, guidance, GISTM conformance processes, and participated in various assurance activities.
